The CD Luc Houtkamp - CONTINUUM contains performances by the POW Ensemble of Houtkamp’s compositions BoX of BriX (2010) and Uiterste Staat (2009).
Box of BriX, for five musicians and electronics, is an assembly of 33 small compositions and 4-track tape.
Uiterste Staat is a virtuoso "solo concert" for electric guitar (Wiek Hijmans) and two computers.
Luc Houtkamp
Luc Houtkamp is saxophone player, improvisator, specialist in live-electronics, ensemble director and composer. In 2004, he received the VPRO Boy Edgar Prize, the most important oeuvre prize for improvised music in the Netherlands.
On the CD CONTINUUM his work as a composer is at the forefront. Improvisation is still an important component of Houtkamp’s music, but nowadays can been seen more as a connecting element between electronic and instrumental music.
Luc Houtkamp builds bridges between improvisation and composition and various genres. “What interests me in the first place is the manner in which musicians play together, and how you can steer this, by means of composition and the use of live electronics”.
In Houtcamp’s artistic conception musical style is subordinate to the force of music itself. Style and treatment can differ with compositions, depending on the situation, without falling into post-modern eloquence.
