Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition
Competition 2009
Amsterdam (The Netherlands) from 20 to 26 April 2009.
On Sunday, April 26th the Polish pianist Małgorzata Walentynowicz (1979) received the First Prize (€ 4.500) of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, a concours for interpreters for contemporary music. She was one 5 finalists performing in the MuziekGebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam.
The jury of the 37th edition of this competition for the performance of contemporary music consisted of Lucas Vis (chairman), Wiek Hijmans, Luc Houtkamp, Stefano Scodanibbio, and Steffen Schleiermacher. In the First Round there were 62 participants, in the Second Round 16 were left. 5 finalists battled it out on Sunday evening to an eager public in the MuziekGebouw aan 't IJ.
- First Prize (€ 4.500): Małgorzata Walentynowicz (Poland) - piano
- Second Prize (€ 2250 ): Ear Massage percussion quartet (Netherlands)
- Third Prize (€1125 ): The Outer Banks Duo (United States) with Stacy Wilson - saxophone and David Hughes-piano
Other finalists were the sonic.art saxophone quartet from Germany and the Italian flutist Matteo Cesari, who reached the fourth and fifth position, respectively.
This years' Special Prize of €2250 for electric guitar was not awarded, but will be kept in stock for the next edition of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition, which will take place in 2011.
At that thime a Special Prize is additionally planned for organ 2011.
There were 62 participants from more than thirty countries in the first round. Sixteen made it through to the second round. The jury this year consisted of Lucas Vis (chair), Wiek Hijmans, Luc Houtkamp, Stefano Scodanibbio and Steffen Schleiermacher. The first rounds were held in the Amsterdam Conservatoy and het Orgelpark; the final was held in the the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ te Amsterdam.
