Boudewijn Tarenskeen awarded the 2009 Matthijs Vermeulen Prize
The 2009 Matthijs Vermeulen Prize jury awarded Boudewijn Tarenskeen the prize for his Mattheus Passie [Matthaeus Passion], a composition for nineteen singers.
The winner of the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize receives € 20,000.
The Matthijs Vermeulen judges Tino Haenen (chair), Daniel Reuss and Wim Vos admire the composer's audacity in positioning his work in the tradition of Passion music.
According to the jury, Tarenskeen has succeeded in making a special and original addition:
"The essence of his work, situated somewhere on the borderline between concert and theatre, will reveal itself only with the passage of time. Sparingly and efficiently using a limited number of elementary means, the composer created a work exciting in ways both acoustic and dramatic,"
