Night of the Unexpected 2009

03 September 2009

A one night festival crosscutting a variety of musical styles and boundaries.

The Night of the Unexpected is a one night festival in which the diversity and dynamics of the contemporary music practice are fully featured and explored. The format encompasses composed classical music, improvised music, pop music, electronic dance music and performances in which music is combined with visual arts are all included.

For this event, a specific type of presentation has been developed creating an unexpected, direct relationship between audience and artists. The programme is directed as a sequence of short performances without intermissions. The stage as the traditional domain of the artist is often traded in for a more integral position closer to the audience and one that explores the specific characteristics of the performance space

Highlights include:

  • Ciel Démandé by the Chinese composer Yu Tao. This composition is selected for as one of the nominees for the Gaudeamus Music Prize 2009. A work for pipa, percussion and electronica with a theatrical staging.
  • Gaudeamus Music Week jury member Huba de Graaff wrote the music for the “surveillance opera” Diepvlees. A fragment, originally cut from the final version will be performed.
