Selection MCN contemporaries abroad, autumn 2009

29 September 2009

The Netherlands is only a small country in a big world. Therefore MCN actively promotes Dutch music abroad. MCN has made a selection of recent projects.

This time special attention to the ISCM World Music Days in Sweden, the European Live Electronics Competition of the ECPNM and the famous Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

ISCM World New Music Days 2009
Under the title ‘Listen to the World’ the ISCM World New Music Days will take place from 24 September to 4 October. This year the festival will take place in three locations in Sweden: Visby, Växjö and Gotenburg. The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) was founded in 1922. At the annual World New Music Days new compositions that have been entered by members of the ISCM and selected by a panel of judges, will be presented. The Dutch entry is mnemonist S. by Yannis Kyriakides.

ECPNM
One of the events of the ISCM World New Music Days, that will take place in Gotenburg on 4 October, is the presentation of the second European Live Electronics Competition organised by the European Conference of Promoters of New Music (ECPNM). As many as four works from the Netherlands have been selected: Open for piano and live electronics by Anne Parlevliet, Turbulence for piano, live electronics and video by Katarina Glowicka, Cut for paper, percussion and computer by Jan Trützschler, and Proteon for a user interface with triggers, light sensors, a Dataglove, real-time sound synthesis software and a colony of bioluminescent algae by Maurits Fennis.

Huddersfield
From 19 to 29 November 2009 the famous Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival will take place once more in England. Like last year, the Netherlands will be well-represented. There will be several programmes celebrating the 70th birthday of Louis Andriessen with Cristina Zavalloni, the Dutch ensemble NAP, the British ensemble Icebreaker, Monica Germino, Heleen Hulst and the piano duo Cees van Zeeland / Gerard Bouwhuis, as well as an extensive film programme. The festival will also feature concerts by pianist Ralph van Raat, Sarah Nicolls with a new work by Michel van der Aa, Percussion Group The Hague with Words & Beyond by Sueng-ah Oh, and a performance of Kristoffer Zegers’ Piano Phases for 40 pianists.
