The Night of the Unexpected

14 August 2008

The Night of the Unexpected is an unusual festival presented in a single evening. A special experience, an evening full of musical surprises in all sorts of styles and genres, from experimental techno to composed music. The program remains a surprise.

You will be treated to piano performances that tax the physical limits of the performers by hanging weights on their arms. You will also be treated to electronic music by Xenakis and music by emerging talents inspired by this renowned composer. Important talents in turntablism, music with a turntable as instrument, will also be presented. And one of the nominated composers/performers of the International Gaudeamus Prize 2008 will perform her piece.

The Night of the Unexpected ruptures our expectations; entrenched habits are challenged in a playful way. An ensemble positions itself in the middle of the hall, you hear singing from the balcony and all around you see homemade loudspeaker characters. In short, the audience is surrounded by concerts, performances and sound installations.

Guest programmer Roland Spekle compiled the Night of the Unexpected together with Koen Nutters of DNK Amsterdam. The Night of the Unexpected is part of the Gaudeamus Music Week and is presented in cooperation with Paradiso and STEIM. It will take place on September 5, at Paradiso (Amsterdam).
