Brian Archinal winner 2011
On Sunday, April 17th, the American percussionist Brian Archinal was awarded the first prize (€4.500) of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition 2011. He was one of the five finalists who battled it out for the three prizes. Following his second round audition with All facing upwards van Piet-Jan van Rossum and Corporel (which means “having to do with the body”) by Vinko Globokar he performed Louis Andriessen’s Woodpecker and part one from Bone Alphabet by Brian Ferneyhough.
The second prize (€ 2,250) was awarded to the English harpist Eleanor Turner, the third prize (€ 1,125) went to the Solaris Duo consisting Joel Diegert, an American saxophonist and the Georgian pianist Mariam Vardzelashvili. The remaining finalists were Vincent Lhermet (accordion) from France and the English recorder player Francesca Thompson. The special prize for electric guitar and the special prize for organ were not granted this year.
38th edition
The 38th edition of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition took place in Amsterdam from 10-17 April and was organized by Music Center the Netherlands and made possible in cooperation with the Orgelpark and the Conservatory of Amsterdam. There were 83 participants from thirty-one countries in the first round, of which 15 successfully reached the second round.
This year, the jury consisted of the conductor Lucas Vis (chairman), the American guitarist Seth Josel, harp player Ernestine Stoop, pianist/organist Leo van Doeselaar and the Russian viola player Mikhail Bereznitsky.
Brian Archinal
Brian Archinal received his BA from the University of Kentucky where he studied with James Campbell; he obtained his MA from the University of California in San Diego where he studied with Steven Schick. He is currently based in Basel, Switzerland studying with combined Fulbright and ESKAS fellowships.
Archinal has performed with Ensemble-Phoenix (Basel, Switzerland) red fish blue fish (La Jolla, CA), La Jolla Symphony (La Jolla, CA), the Lexington Philharmonic (Lexington, KY) the Kaohsiung City Symphony (Kaohsiung, Taiwan), SOUND/VISION (Lexington, KY), Arizona Contemporary Music Ensemble (Tempe, AZ), and the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra (Lucerne Switzerland).
He has performed at the Venice Bienalle (Venice, Italy), Monday Evening Concerts (Los Angeles), Carlsbad Music Festival (CA), Concours de Genevé (Geneva, Switzerland), Lucerne Festival, Chapman University ‘Day of Percussion’, Northeastern University ‘Fusion Arts Exchange” (Boston, MA), FreeKY Festival (Lexington, KY), two Percussive Arts Society Conventions, and been a Featured Artist at the Music For All Summer Symposium (Bloomington, IL). As a competitor, he finished in the Semi-Finals of the Concours de Geneve (2009), and was Runner-Up in the Atlanta Symphony ‘Modern Snare Drum’ Competition (2008).
Among highlights of established composers, Archinal has worked closely with Roger Reynolds Michael Pisaro, Philippe Manoury, Christopher Dench David Lang, Peter Ablinger, Edmund Campion, Trevor Bača, Nicholas Deyoe, and David Crowell.
He recently released his debut CD entitled Self | Space, with recordings of multi-tracked ensemble works by Edmund Campion, Jordan Munson, Trevor Bača and Peter Ablinger
Eleanor Turner
Eleanor Turner started learning the harp at the age of five. In 1993 she began her formal musical education at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, studying harp with Daphne Boden. It was also there that she first developed her passion for contemporary music in studies with Dr Peter Fribbins and Edwin Roxburgh. She subsequently continued her harp studies with Daphne Boden, and more recently with Alison Nicholls, whilst also attending masterclasses in the UK and abroad with internationally renowned harpists including Susann McDonald (USA), Catherine Michel (France) and Erika Waardenburg (Netherlands). She has recently been invited to play in a masterclass on ‘The Crown of Ariadne’ with Judy Loman (Canada) and the composer Raymond Murray Schafer (Canada) at the 2011 World Harp Congress in Vancouver.
The Solaris Duo
The Solaris Duo was formed in 2008 and has since thrilled audiences throughout Europe with their dynamic style and versatile programming.
Saxophonist Joel Diegert and pianist Mariam Vardzelashvili enjoy introducing audiences to the possibilities of their uncommon instrumental ensemble. The Duo is a major proponent for contemporary music, dedicated to expanding their available repertoire, but often performs transcriptions of classical masterpieces and stylized popular music, as well. Pianist Mariam Vardzelashvili was born in Georgia and studied at the Tbilisi State Conservatory until the age of 20, when she moved to the United States to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
Saxophonist Joel Diegert comes from upstate New York, and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Ithaca College and Bowling Green State University. In 2008 he moved to Paris to study with master saxophonists Jean-Michel Goury and Vincent David
