Frozen Echo

“Frozen Echo” by  Regina van Berkel / Theo Verbey premiered at Ballet Am Rhein, Germany

Ballet Am Rhein; Deutsche Oper Am Rhein, Opernhaus, Düsseldorf, Germany

Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, Conducted by Catherine Rückwardt

In Frozen Echo, her first piece with Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg, Regian van Berkel plunged into an intense dialogue with composer Theo Verbey.  His work “Schaduw” (shade), first performed in 2002, served as a basis which the composer expanded for Regina van Berkel and “shaded“ differently by the addition of further instruments.

“An ideal dancer is capable of making music with the body, painting the tones bodily into the available space in such a manner that we can see them“, defines Regina van Berkel as her standpoint on the collaboration of dance and music in her work. The available space for her is not just the surroundings in which it happens, but in the main an object to which the dance reacts and vice versa – space in motion. This interaction will also characterize her first piece with Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg, for which the choreographer will take the plunge into an intense dialogue with the installation artist Dietmar Janeck and also enlist the services of the composer Theo Verbey, who was born in 1959 in Delft (Netherlands) and has been teaching composition at the Amsterdam Conservatoire since 1995. Verbey’s work “Schaduw” (shade), first performed in 2002, will serve as a basis which the composer will expand for Regina van Berkel and “shade“ differently by the addition of further instruments.
