New compositions by Tobias Klein to premiere on Friday, July 9th in the Yenisei hall

For the 2010 edition, the commission has been granted to reed player/composer Tobias Klein, who has selected the trio Lackritz as his vehicle. The anything but ordinary line-up of Lackritz is guaranteed to produce an unconventional sound, which is further enhanced by the tasteful use of electronics. Despite the rich sound, the trio’s music remains remarkably transparent due to the absence of bass and drums. Lackritz’s unique combination of melodic, harmonic and abstract sounds is incomparable to that of any other ensemble in the fields of  improvised or contemporary composed music. Lackritz is not an ad hoc ensemble, but rather a tight-knit trio. “We will be playing my compositions at the North Sea Jazz Festival, but the DNA of Lackritz comes from all three of us,” says Klein.

Every year the North Sea Jazz Festival and Music Center The Netherlands, in collaboration with the Fonds Podiumkunsten (Fund for the Performing Arts), commission new work from a promising young Dutch jazz composer. The composer is given maximum freedom in writing the composition(s) and the opportunity to perform the piece(s) at the festival with a line-up of his/her choice. The commission has been granted toJorrit Dijkstra (2009), Jeroen van Vliet (2008), Joost Buis (2006), Oene van Geel (2005), Harmen Fraanje (2004), Jasper Blom (2003), Martin Fondse (2002) and Maarten Ornstein (2001).
