Each year, Music Center the Netherlands and the North Sea Jazz Festival commission a promising Dutch jazz composer to write a free composition. This year, alto saxophonist and bass guitarist Dirk Bruinsma gets to perform his new work Hijinks & Jitters together with his band Pumporgan at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Saturday July 9th in the Yenisei hall.

Interesting composers are immediately recognized by their own identity. And in this case that identity cannot be denied.

Bruinsma has a background in avantgardist rock and jazz and is influenced by dance music, especially directed towards the energetic power of rhythm and blues, rock ’n roll and swing.

MCN Composition Project North Sea Jazz

Every year the North Sea Jazz Festival and Music Center The Netherlands, in collaboration with the Performing Arts Fund NL, commission new work from a promising young Dutch jazz composer. The composer is given maximum freedom in writing the composition(s) and the opportunity to perform the piece(s) at the festival with a line-up of his/her choice. The commission has been granted to Tobias Klein (2010), Jorrit Dijkstra (2009), Jeroen van Vliet (2008), Joost Buis (2006), Oene van Geel (2005), Harmen Fraanje (2004), Jasper Blom (2003), Martin Fondse (2002) and Maarten Ornstein (2001).

The Composer's Project is a collaboration between North Sea Jazz Festival and Muziek Centrum Nederland, assigned by the Performing Arts Fund NL.
