VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize 2011
for Ferdinand Povel
The most prestigious award in the Netherlands for jazz and improvised music, the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize 2011, has been awarded to tenor saxophonist and teacher Ferdinand Povel. The award comes with prize money of 12,500 euros.
On Monday May 16, the award was presented to Ferdinand Povel during a special concert at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. There were performances by a.o. Big Band Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Ferdinand Povel/John Marshall Quintet, Sanna van Vliet Trio and Ruud Jacobs Quintet.

Tour
From May 2010 until January 2011 Ferdinand Povel will be touring the Netherlands.

“Povel is an inventive musician who has shown himself capable of performing at the highest level, with undiminished zest and enthusiasm within the framework of hardbop.”
“His qualities haven’t gone unnoticed abroad either. The list of musicians with whom Povel has performed reads like a regular who’s who in jazz: Dexter Gordon, Sarah Vaughan, Philly Joe Jones, Maynard Ferguson, Kenny Clarke, George Gruntz, Tete Montoliu, Woody Shaw, Jimmy Knepper;”
