Edison for Three Concerti by Martijn Padding
The Edison Foundation has announced that Martijn Padding is the recipient of the Edison in its new category De Ontdekking (The Discovery) for his work ‘Three Concerti’. The jury was unanimous: “…so, contemporary music can sound sunny, playful and uncomplicated.”
The category The Discovery is new to the Edisons. To this end, record labels and members of the jury may enter works for this category.
From Chopin to Monk
Winning this Edison is recognition for Padding’s extensive oeuvre. The Dutch composer Martijn Padding was born in 1956, the year in which Elvis and rock' n-roll conquered the world. He grew up with pop music and Beethoven, without any influences from the fictitious dividing line between pop and classical music.
Chopin and Thelonius Monk are equally valued and in his compositions Padding also inspires himself with everything from Balinese gamelan to the work of Stockhausen. Padding studied composition with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He also studied piano with Fania Chapiro and musicology at the University of Utrecht.
